YMCI focuses on the following six areas

Conflict/Diversity: Ethnic and religious conflicts are the major sources of tension in Nigeria. These conflicts have a far-reaching effect on children and youth and they are vulnerable in unique ways. This initiative will help children and youth understand the origin, nature and causes of these conflicts and the impact on their lives. More important, it will help them understand the role they can play in conflict prevention and resolution.

Communication & Development: For children and youth to have an impact in society, they not only have to understand the issues that affect them, they must be able to communicate these issues in a proper and effective manner. This initiative will provide an opportunity for children and youth to express their views on national issues and child right issues and seek solutions where necessary.

HIV/AIDS: This epidemic threatens the future of the country as more and more children and youth are infected daily. This initiative aims to provide children and youth with factual information about the disease. The idea is not only to help children and youth change their lifestyles and attitudes, but to make them the torchbearers in the fight against the disease.

Environment: It is the duty of today's children and youth to make sure that air, land and water are protected so that future generations inherit a cleaner, healthier society. This initiative aims to teach children and youth the importance of caring for and protecting the environment. It will help them understand the socio-economic dimensions of environmental degradation and its impact on their lives. But more important, it will teach them how to hold stakeholders accountable.

Gender: The media display a general inattention to children’s issues and portray children and youth in stereotypical ways (the violent boy or the seductive girl). This initiative aims to help children, youth and the media to become gender sensitive by creating awareness about gender equality and mobilising every section of society towards eliminating prejudices against young people, particularly girls.

Global Outreach: This initiative will provide children and youth with factual and independent information on Globalisation and how it affects them and their counterparts in other parts of the world. It will also be a forum for children and youth in Nigeria to interact with children and youth in other parts of the world through exchanges, visits and sharing of information.
