There is an urgent need for development and the consolidation of the democratic process in Nigeria. The role that communication plays in this regard can’t be overemphasized.
We are convinced that children and youth are pivotal to democracy and development. But they need to be empowered to effectively contribute their quota. And they can only be empowered if they have access to the tools of communication to effectively address issues that affect them.
For children and youth to participate meaningfully in the community development process they need to develop their abilities and skills. Children and youth need to be equipped with leadership and social communication abilities needed to promote and defend their rights.
Often, children and youth are used to fan the embers of religious and ethnic conflict in Nigeria and very often they are the first line of defence for many adults once there is a crisis. Rarely do they have any input on issues that affect them much less on national issues.
We believe children and youth are best placed to speak persuasively about their rights and to communicate these to other young people and adults, and propose and demand solutions.
We believe it is important to give voice to young people by promoting their effective participation in the media through stories, training and media production activities.
